Political Battle for Mexico City Congressional Seat

A political battle is underway in Mexico City to fill a vacant congressional seat. Ángel Tamariz has re-emerged as the frontrunner, a move that could resolve the prolonged conflict but create new challenges ahead of elections and the World Cup.

Political Battle for Mexico City Congressional Seat

In Mexico City (CDMX), the MORENA party reaffirmed its unity amid national tensions. The focus is on the succession in the Álvaro Obregón mayoralty, where Ángel Tamariz has worked in the past and could potentially run again for the 2027 elections. Initially, Tamariz was seen as the frontrunner to replace Fernando Zárate in the Congress of the City of Mexico, but his candidacy was later put into doubt. Other potential candidates included the national communications secretary, Camila Martínez, and local election candidate Pablo Hernández. Negotiations took an unexpected turn in recent hours, and Tamariz has once again emerged as the favorite. He participated in an event in Iztapalapa alongside Head of Government Clara Brugada. If confirmed, his appointment could be finalized next Tuesday. This would resolve the political dispute but also creates a leadership vacuum at the Agency for Digital Innovation in Politics (ADIP) just weeks before the start of the FIFA World Cup, an event for which ADIP developed a key chatbot.
